How We Research and Compare Gear

Last updated: August 27, 2026 techpicksio.com editorial team

techpicksio.com is a spec-first research site, not a hands-on review site. Every recommendation on this site is built from published manufacturer specifications, official product documentation, and a synthesis of verified customer and expert reviews published elsewhere. We do not currently own most of the gear we write about, and we never write as though we do.

The four inputs behind every guide

A product only enters a guide once we can answer the buying question from documented sources. In practice that means four of them, in descending order of weight:

  1. Manufacturer specification sheets. Weight, dimensions, material, mounting thread count and type, battery capacity, CRI, colour temperature range, transmission range, sequential read and write speed. These are the numbers that appear in our comparison tables.
  2. Official product documentation and manuals. Compatibility lists, supported phone models, case-thickness limits, included accessories, and the caveats manufacturers bury in a manual but leave off the marketing page.
  3. Verified customer reviews at volume. Read for recurring, specific, mechanical complaints — a clamp that loosens, a magnet that slips, a coating that scratches — never for a star average, which we do not reproduce as a rating of our own.
  4. Published expert and press reviews. Used to corroborate or contradict a spec claim, particularly for anything a spec sheet cannot express, such as how a microphone's noise floor actually sounds.

Where two sources disagree on a figure, we use the manufacturer's published number and say so in the table. Where a figure is unpublished, the cell reads that it is unpublished rather than carrying an estimate.

What we compare, by category

Each category has a small set of specifications that actually change a purchase decision. Those are the columns in our tables, and everything else is left out on purpose.

The specifications compared in each gear category on techpicksio.com
Category What we compare Why it decides the purchase
Cages & rigs Material, weight, mount type, thread count, case compatibility Determines how many accessories you can run at once and whether your phone fits with a case on
Wireless microphones Transmitter weight, battery life, range, connector type, onboard recording Decides whether the mic survives a full shoot day and whether it plugs into your phone at all
Lighting CRI, colour temperature range, output, battery runtime at full power CRI decides whether skin tones look right; runtime decides whether the light lasts the interview
Gimbals Payload, folded size, battery life, phone-width range Payload and width decide whether your phone in its cage will actually balance
Drones Take-off weight, sensor size, video bitrate, flight time, transmission range Take-off weight decides which registration rules apply to you before anything else matters
Storage Sequential write speed, interface, capacity, enclosure rating Sustained write speed is what determines whether ProRes records without dropping frames
Lenses & filters Thread size, stop range, coating, mount system Thread and mount decide compatibility; stop range decides whether you can hold a cinematic shutter angle

How a winner gets picked

We do not score products out of ten. A numeric score implies a measurement we did not take. Instead, each guide names a winner for a stated use case and explains the trade-off in plain sentences — the recommendation sits at the top of the page in a verdict block, and the reasoning that produced it sits directly underneath.

The winner is the product that best serves the guide's stated buyer, not the most expensive one and not the one with the highest commission. Where the best pick for a beginner differs from the best pick overall, we say both, because those are two different questions and merging them helps nobody.

What we will not do

These are hard rules, and they are the reason some things you would expect on a gear site are absent here:

  • No fabricated first-hand testing. We do not write "we measured", "in our test", or usage anecdotes for gear we have not used. If an article ever does reflect first-hand use, it will say so explicitly at the top.
  • No star ratings or scores. We publish no rating of our own, and we do not convert an Amazon star average into a techpicksio.com verdict badge.
  • No live prices. Amazon's operating agreement restricts displaying prices outside their approved APIs, and a stale price is worse than none. We describe price tiers in ranges and link out for the current figure.
  • No manufactured urgency. No countdown timers, no stock counters, no "3 people are viewing this".
  • No invented credentials. There is no fictional expert reviewer behind these guides. Articles are attributed to the techpicksio.com editorial team, which is what they actually are.

Updates and corrections

Every guide carries a visible "last updated" date, and that date changes only when the content changes. Specs, model line-ups and compatibility shift; when a product is discontinued or superseded we revise the guide rather than leaving a dead recommendation in place.

If you find a figure that does not match the manufacturer's current published spec, tell us through the contact page and we will correct it and re-date the page.

Affiliate independence

techpicksio.com is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program and earns a commission on qualifying purchases made through links on this site, at no extra cost to you. Commission rates play no part in which products are covered or which one wins a guide, and we do not accept payment, free product, or editorial input from manufacturers in exchange for placement. Every commercial link on the site is marked as sponsored, and a disclosure appears above the first one on every page.
